     Stay in the colonial city of Antigua, once the seat of the Captaincy General of Guatemala, declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1979. The Casa Santo Domingo Hotel, Museum and Spa is part of the city's history. Originally founded as a monastery and convent it was completely destroyed by the devastating Santa Marta earthquakes (which lasted from July to December) in 1773. Its beautifully restored ruins, the result of archaeologists and artists' patient and professional work, preserve the unique character of this gorgeous property, now one of the most charming historic hotels in the world. The Santo Domingo Convent and the Colegio Mayor de Santo Tomas de Aquino were a single unit during the colonial period, which now house the hotel and spa and no less than 6 museums that are part of the city's cultural tourism circuit and our Colonial History Walking Tour. These museums are open to visitors and the works of art they contain may be appreciated thanks to an agreement between Guatemala's Universidad de San Carlos and the Casa Santo Domingo Hotel, Museum and Spa.
